There are two types of stains on teeth and there are different bleaching methods for each of these :

  1. Intrinsic stains

These stains that are on the inside of the tooth and show through the enamel as discoloration. These stains may be caused by coffee, wine, tobacco, or other products that can permeate into the pores of your teeth to cause discoloration.

Hydrogen peroxide or Carbamide peroxide are the most effective material for removing the internal stains. When applied to the tooth, the hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and radical hydroxyl ions, as these ions work their way through the dentinal tubules and into the tooth, they attach themselves to stain particles and effectively break the stains apart that block out the light. More light passes through the teeth and makes them look lighter as the stains are broken into smaller and smaller pieces.

Intrinsic teeth whitening products include: TraysStrips, Gels, Pens and Professional teeth whitening in-office

  2. Extrinsic stains
These stains that are on the surface of the tooth. These are often newer than intrinsic stains and may be caused by coffee, wine, tobacco too. Teeth whitening methods for extrinsic stains is polishing tooth only. Intrinsic teeth whitening products include toothpastes.
